B&N Ending Support for Older Nooks in 2024, and They’re Offering $50 off a New Nook

November 28, 2023 by Nathan 7 Comments

Nook Upgrade Offer

In case you haven’t heard, B&N has announced they plan to fully stop supporting some of their early Nook models starting in April of 2024.

If you own one of these older Nooks B&N will give you a $50 off coupon for a new Nook Glowlight 4e if you submit a form with your old Nook’s serial number.

The devices that are going to be affected by the discontinuation of service include the Nook Simple Touch from 2011, the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight from 2012, and the Nook Glowlight from 2013.

By June 2024, the devices listed above will no longer support purchasing content from B&N, and customers will no longer be able to register them or sign into a Nook account.

The devices can still be used to read content that was downloaded before the shutdown date, and they will remain signed in to the user account that was setup before the shutdown, but they will no longer support purchasing or downloading new content, and if you do a factory reset you’ll lose everything on the device and you won’t be able to sign in or register it to a B&N account.

There probably aren’t a lot of people still using Nooks from the 2011-2013 era, but for anyone that still has one of those Nooks you can apply to get $50 off a new Nook Glowlight 4e.

Saying you can get $50 off is a bit disingenuous on B&N’s part considering the Nook Glowlight 4e is always “on sale” for $20 off anyway, so it’s really only $30 off, but being able to get a brand new Nook for $69 is still a pretty good deal (they specifically say $50 off the list price). The coupon is valid until the end of August 2024.

Here’s the link to the Nook Upgrade page where you can submit a form to get the $50 off coupon. If you’re unsure where to locate the serial number for your Nook, check this page for the directions.

Thank you for this information. My Nook GL3 is working fine however, it would be nice to have the newer model .

My Simple Touch still works for me. Since I keep it in WiFi Off mode and side load all of my books via Calibre, I’m not too worried about losing B&N purchases or signing into a Nook account.
That said, if B&N had made the upgrade offer applicable to the GlowLight 4 Plus, I probably would have taken them up on it.

I agree, the coupon is really 30% off the device; and it can’t be used on a different model.

…and they’ve killed Windows app as well. Good that I’ve stopped buying any content from them very much on time.

I only got my glow light nook 3 years ago. I dont want to spend another $100 to replace it, If you can do that, why should I not go to another e reader?

I used the coupon and bought a new Nook. Very sorry. The Nook software is so stunningly flawed and frustrating, I wish I had moved to Kindle. Just this morning I had to “erase and deregister” the device, and then reregister just to download two new books. I’ve had to do that three times in the last six months or so.
