Something weird is going on with Amazon, again. This past Black Friday when they last put the Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite on sale the prices were the highest “sale” prices of the year. In fact $119 for the 8GB Paperwhite 5 was the highest on-sale price ever, at only $20 off.
Now Valentine’s Day is coming up next week, and Amazon always puts Kindles on sale leading up to Valentine’s Day, but this year, so far, they’ve only put the Kindle Paperwhite Kids on sale for $129, which is $40 off the regular price.
At this time last year the same kids Kindle was $50 off, including the 8GB version for $109, which they no longer sell. The Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition was also $50 off, and the 8GB Paperwhite was on sale for $105 and the 2022 Kindle was $75.
This year none of the regular Kindles are on sale at all, and that comes after the most disappointing sale prices ever for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. I don’t know what’s going on but it’s not good.
Being able to get $40 off the Kindle Paperwhite Kids is still a decent deal, and it’s better than paying full price for a regular Kindle right now like a lot of people are going to do, not knowing the kids model is identical to the regular version.
The exact same 16GB Kindle Paperwhite is selling for $149 right now, so it makes zero sense to buy it instead, even if you don’t care about the kids bundle that adds a free cover and an upgraded 2-year warranty. The kids bundle also includes a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids+ for access to a library of content for kids.
The kids models aren’t as good of a deal as they used to be now that they show ads by default when not using kids mode, but they’re still a good value if you want the free cover and upgraded warranty.

Well I gave in an ld order one. I have the basic Kindle and really enjoy it, but there are times I wish I had a larger screen.
