Onyx Advertised Wrong Android Version on New Boox Go 6

September 3, 2024 by Nathan 3 Comments

Boox Go 6

Last week when Onyx officially announced the release of the Boox Go 6, they said that it runs Android 12 like the other two Go models, but it turns out Onyx doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

After people started receiving the Boox Go 6, some were surprised to find out that it actually runs Android 11, not Android 12 like advertised.

So now Onyx has changed the description on their website to say it runs Android 11, but it still says it runs Android 12 other places, like on the B&H website.

There’s also a picture of the box for the Boox Go 6 on the reddit post linked above that says it runs Android 12, so even the box advertises the wrong Android version.

Somebody screwed up on this one. And since Onyx doesn’t update Android versions after the fact, it looks like the Boox Go 6 is going to be stuck with an even more outdated version of Android than expected.

Given that fact, there’s even less of a difference between the Boox Go 6 and the Poke5 from last year than initially reported. In fact, the differernces are so minor you could make the arguement that Onyx basically just changed the name of the Poke5 to the Go 6—that’s straight out of Kobo’s playbook.

They did change the CPU and maybe a few other small details, but it’s certainly not an “upgrade” in any meaningful way. The Boox Go 6 uses a Carta 1300 screen, but according to reports on reddit, they switched to a Carta 1300 screen on the Poke5 at some point too.

Overall, the Android version isn’t going to make much of a difference functionally so it’s not as big of a deal as you’d think, especially when it comes to an E Ink reading device, but eventually apps will stop supporting Android 11 before Android 12. Android 11 dates back to 2020 and is no longer supported.

Boox were notorious for not getting the weights of their devices right, so getting the OS wrong is hardly a surprise.

Ha, ha, Android 11 or 12…they are both almost ancient now.
It would be interesting from a legal point of view whether the false claims about the Android versions on the website and the box can be considered fraud.

I doesn’t matter. Or could somebody please put here a detailed list about the differences between these two Android versions and the importance related to an Onyx ebook reader?
