Amazon Still Selling Kindle DX International Version for $199

May 30, 2014 by Nathan

Kindle DX

Okay, so this is kind of odd. Amazon recently stopped selling the Kindle DX (for the second time) and since then the device has only been available used, and at majorly inflated prices.

But if you know just where to look you can still find the Kindle DX for sale new on Amazon for the regular price of $199. The kicker is it’s the international version of the Kindle DX.

I think that the only difference with the international version is it doesn’t come with an AC charger since outlets differ by country; instead it just comes with a micro-USB cable for charging via a computer. The 3G radio may be different as well, but both models have 3G access globally so perhaps not.

The strange thing is you cannot find the international version of the Kindle DX by running searches on Amazon or by viewing the other Kindle pages. Even typing “international Kindle DX” into search doesn’t turn it up. Basically the only way to find it is by going to the product page directly.

I’m not 100% positive that customers with US addresses can buy the international version, but I was able to add it to my cart and get all the way to the point of placing the order without any issues, so it does appear to work.

The Kindle DX is the ebook reader that just won’t go away. Just when you think Amazon has stopped selling them for good, more units seem to turn up somewhere.

my mother hates ereaders. but I can’t always find large print to interest her. I get so many free/cheap kindle books that in frustration I bought the dx. while she isn’t fond of it, she can manage it – because it doesn’t have a swipe screen. all she can/needs to do is turn it on and push a page forward button (both which I’ve labeled). I’m glad I could get it last year. some people struggle with the “touchy” swipe screens!

I know exactly what you mean. My grandma could benefit a lot by using an ereader like the Kindle DX with much larger fonts than paper books, but getting her to accept and use the technology is the another story entirely.

Well the supposedly international version of it instead of 199USD is more like 270USD after postage and custom fees. Thanks for the info though 🙂

It must be a regional thing. It has free shipping as an option here in the US.

Just placed an order for a DX. I’ll let you know if the order goes through or not. Hope it does – been kicking myself for not ordering it earlier.

Received my DX yesterday. It’s big. Read somewhere the screen is 2.5 times the size of the 6″ Kindle. From a purely reading standpoint, I will be using this when I don’t need the portability of my PW. It’s a keeper for me. Thanks for the heads up, Nathan! Now Amazon needs to come up with a 8″ PW. 🙂

Glad I could help. I think an 8″ Paperwhite would be pretty awesome too. I’ve reviewed a couple 8″ ebook readers and tablets in the past and feel that’s a really good size for reading.

I wish they would update the DX as a touch screen without the keyboard. I would buy it.

I got one too. The screen is amazing. The stock pdf reader is a big letdown. I was thinking of returning it but then I found kindlepdfviewer (need to jailbreak), which has nearly solved all my issues. It can crop, read epub and cbz format.

But there is no denying that it is an aging hardware. The page turns are quite slow but I will take it over reading on lcd screen.

Thank you so much for this post. You may have saved my sanity. I thought it was out of stock and they had stopped selling it – and that the civilization in general had given way to barbarism.

I will have to pay customs charges, yes, but who cares.

I just wish Amazon will upgrade the technology on DXes. DX needs to receive the first class citizenship status that it highly deserves.

Great web site. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for this info! I just successfully ordered one. I’m so glad to have it for this price. Could even get free shipping!

I’m 69 and retired, read mostly at home, and the option for larger print on a larger page will be a huge plus.

I love my little Kindle if I’m out for an appointment but why Amazon doesn’t consider the burgeoning elderly population, now addicted to a Kindle e-reader, is beyond belief!

Current expected ship date is 2-4 months as of today.

That’s kind of weird. I didn’t think they were making them anymore. That would seem to suggest they are getting more in instead of simply reshuffling stock.

Yeah.I have ordered a kindle DX yesterday but the expected date is given somewhere in October-November.Will I be getting it earlier? Currently it says it can be shipped in 2-3 months.

Thank you so much for posting this! I bought one of the original, white DX Kindles in 2009 and absolutely loved it. I am 31 years old but am completely unimpressed with touch screens or readers with color graphics. I just want a lightweight, large reader in gray scale! The original design was brilliant and I have no idea why the phased it out (if it ain’t broke…) but sadly my reader did actually break and I thought I would never be able to get another one. Like Dumpy above, I ordered mine and it says I will not receive it until October or November. Let’s hope it comes in earlier! Does anyone know why it is taking so long to ship these to the US?

I ordered mine last month. And the delivery estimate continues to say Sept 11 – Oct 23. (The discounted leather case for it was shipped early. Still in its shipping box. Unsealed. Just in case…)

I don’t mind waiting. And find it interesting that the shipping dates keep being 2-3 months from an order date.

I really doubt if they are going to ship Kindle DX.And also we cannot cancel the order as the CS states,”It is under shipping process ” which isn’t right.

Has anyone received one of these after ordering it with a “Ships in 2 to 4 months” notice? As of today, the webpage at Amazon is still up for the International DX, but it still says “Ships in 2 to 4 months.”

Just wondering if anyone who ordered this back in June or July has gotten the darn thing.

It’s now November and delivery is STILL being quoted as 2-3 months. Do they really go out the door that quick that they can’t keep up with the demand???

    • Nathan says

      November 6, 2014 at 7:15 am

No, there certainly isn’t much demand for the DX, so that’s not it. There’s something fishy about the whole thing. Amazon either needs to finally let the Kindle DX die, or stop jerking customers around with this kind of ridiculous listing with shipping 2-3 months away. It’s more expensive, but everyone would be better off getting a Boox M96 instead. It makes the DX seem like a child’s toy by comparison.
