Koji Seto has uploaded another in-depth video review showing the new 13.3-inch Sony DPT-RP1 PDF reader in action.
Last week’s video review compared the new version with the 1st gen model and gave a general overview of the updated features.
This week’s video goes more in-depth, showing how to load files onto the device and how the NFC features work.
Toward the end of the video (18:00) the two-page view is shown where you can have two documents open at once side-by-side and use each independently. For example, you can have a page of handwritten notes open on one side and a PDF on the other. It looks like a really handy feature.
Once again the video is in Japanese but even if you don’t understand the language it’s pretty easy to follow along.
The DPT-RP1 must be pretty popular in Japan because the first video already has nearly 300,000 views and it was just uploaded four days ago.
The Sony DPT-RP1 is already on backorder from the Sony Japan website, but the US version is still up for pre-order from Amazon and B&H for $699.
See some of these earlier posts on the Sony DPT-RP1 for more information about it.

It seems really fast. Sadly, they are not sending it outside the U.S.

I’m pretty sure B&H ships internationally. It’s probably pricey though.

B&H ships it. You’ll just have to pay hefty import taxes to your country’s custom etc.

Thanks for posting! Super weak that it can’t mirror or pair with any Bluetooth device (e.g., keyboard, music page turner). And they’ve killed the web browser, which was useful for logging into academic journals.
Xiang says
Guess I’d always just download the journals first and copy them to the reader anyways. Logging into journals in that way seems quite unwieldy… Kindle keyboard had an experimental web browser but not many people used it.
The lack of bluetooth keyboard is a shame, though I usually take notes on my computer when using a Kindle. Guess I’ll do the same here, and just handwrite when necessary.

Case study:
Academic person travels weekly to distant location for work. Uses train, bicycle, local public transport. Currently takes tablet, laptop, stack of papers and clothing supplies (for 1 -2 O/N stays).
Has monitored the DPT S1 situation and seen 2nd hand prices soar post production period. Ready to go when DPT RP1 announced, assuming a work-around for Europe. Baffled as to why no browser bundled or BT keyboard support, wished to drop either tablet or laptop from inventory. Browser required for rudimentary purposes only, video/ animation not required, in fact it is not desired. Finally, wishes to have off-white model.
What are the chances DPT RP1 will reach EU, will a firmware update include a browser, will off-white be made available to that market?
Cathartic speech over. Invitation for informed replies open.

I am afraid they won’t have an EU release at all, just as they did with DPT-S1. I have already ordered one from B&H. I live in Germany so the customs fee is quite high but I don’t want to wait any longer. Hopefully the delivery goes smoothly and I get it before this Sunday.
I also want the white model but there’s no guarantee it will be released in non-Japanese language system UI. Most importantly I couldn’t find a way to reliably buy it from Japan without bothering some friends there. Black would also be fine for me.
I don’t find tablets very useful for me, maybe because I have a background in CS and I can’t live without the full functionalities offered by a computer. I just carry a lightweight laptop around.
Anyways, I don’t think you should wait for much longer. Who knows when the next batch will be released, if ever at all. Either you find some acquaintance to buy it for you, or you may order online and pay the customs.

Based on the video is the dropbox sync via the desktop application? I was hoping it was built in directly.
