Here’s something that seems kind of interesting. The base Kindle, the latest model that was released in 2022, is currently unavailable to purchase new on Amazon, and it appears to be out of stock from most of Amazon’s international websites as well.
What’s weird is the kids version of that very same Kindle appears to be in stock just about everywhere; it’s only the regular version that’s suddenly unavailable, like it’s been intentionally pulled from the Kindle lineup.
Usually when something like this happens it means a new Kindle is about to get released.
I’ve been saying for a few weeks now that I expect Amazon to release a new Kindle Paperwhite since it’s been 3 years since the last one came out, but I figured they’d stick with the basic Kindle for another year since it was released in 2022.
But this sudden “supply shortage” would seem to indicate that a new entry-level Kindle is about to drop soon. Of course you could make the argument that it’s simply out of stock and this means nothing, but current Kindles don’t just drop off the map and suddenly become unavailable to purchase from multiple Amazon websites all at once—something is up. It seems more like they intentionally let it run out of stock.
It’s been unavailable for a couple days now on the US Amazon website, and it was just on sale the past couple of weeks before then, but it was only $10 off so it wasn’t a big sale that would cause a sudden spike in sales.
Maybe my expectations are clouding my judgement here, but I really think this is another sign that new Kindles are coming soon. After all, this is the time of year that new Kindles usually get announced. In fact, the Kindle in question was announced on September 13th, 2022.

In Germany Paperwhite is available in all colours, SE missing in black (not knowing if it’s gonna be back), Basic is gona (blue completely, black 2 units left). I really do hope new Kindles are coming. I mean I bought Paperwhite 5 two weeks back, but I have no problem buying another new Kindle it it’s something interesting 😀

Got to be a big redesign coming, especially as other companies have better software (Kobo allows marking up in a book, instead of text box) and better device designs.
My hope is they’re gonna drop a Paperwhite replacement that is slimmer, lighter, that uses a magnet case similar to Scribe and that the software experience is gonna get a huge revamp.

I’m hoping for an 8 inch color Scribe! I definitely think color is on the way! I use my Scribe exclusively for daily puzzles but would love to read my color books on it. Would also love to take notes in color for my studies. I have a Libra Color which I really like, I strongly prefer the Kobo software, E.g. I have a reading progress bar (something Amazon removed in the early 2010’s and I have missed since). But the writing experience on the Scribe feels so natural. I don’t see Amazon sticking with the 10 inch size.
I hope they release something exciting, instead of another black slab.

Yes, I finally saved some cash to pull the trigger on a kindle only to find they’re out of stock everywhere. If it’s a new model, I’m hoping it’s around the same price range as the old one instead of them pushing up into more and more expensive devices. Thanks for the coverage of this.

In Amazon Mexico only the Paperwhite (8, 16, 32) are available. The basic is not in stock and they still list the Oasis although that one is not in stock either. They don’t have the prices listed for the basic and Oasis. You only see them when you look at the comparison chart. They don’t come up when you do a product search.
