Onyx recently dropped the price of their new Nova3 Color with a 7.8-inch color E Ink screen from $419 to $399.
I really doubt $20 off is enough to convince anyone to pull the trigger on it when it so expensive to begin with (that’s only 5% off), but Onyx rarely lowers prices on current products so they must be having trouble selling them at the original price or they’re going to release a newer model soon.
I always thought the price of the Nova3 Color was absurdly high, especially when the regular black and white Nova3 sells for $339 and it’s already much more expensive than similar 7.8-inch models.
However, if you want an ereader with a color E Ink screen I think the Nova3 Color is the best one to get given how ridiculously slow the Pocketbook InkPad Color is by comparison, even if it is $70 cheaper with the same screen.
Onyx also has the advantage of an open Android operating system to install apps to better make use of the color screen.
Even with the lower price I’m just not sure there’s much of a market for these color ereaders given the fact that regular E Ink screens look better when it comes to reading text, and they have far less issues with ghosting. But if the price keeps going down maybe that will help in the long run.
