Last week I posted a PDF review for the Onyx Boox M96, but that’s not all this Android-powered ereader is good for. Now I’ve got the main review for the Boox M96 finished, and it includes a 15 minute video walkthrough and several pictures.
I plan to post some additional reviews and comparisons over the coming weeks as well, covering specific features and apps. If you have any suggestions feel free to leave a comment.

I agree with your conclusion – 10″ of screen makes it a whole different experience than using a small e-reader, and the software works well. Adding Caecilia Roman, my preferred e-font, was as easy as it gets.
I like CoolReader, as it gives good control over type.
It’s now my favorite reader of the half-dozen I’ve used.

Is there a way that I can update my M92 firmware to M96 android edition? Has anyone tried that already?
Nathan says
Very unlikely. The M92 would struggle mightily to run Android with its processor and RAM, and there are other differences between them too that would likely make swapping the OS impossible without customizing the software.

Thanks for the awesome reviews, Nathan. I’m definitely leaning toward making the M96 my next ereader/Android tablet that won’t strain my eyes. I was curious whether the Onyx software allows you to organize books by collections/tags/shelves on the Onyx stock homescreen. I really appreciate the objective, helpful info that you provide…thanks!
Nathan says
Nah, the homescreen needs some work, IMO—sometimes I use Nova Launcher instead. The homescreen displays either recently read or recently added titles. But there’s no way to customize or choose what appears beyond that, and it has an annoying habit of including all supported files, not just ebooks, so things like zip files, html files, and random txt files show up on the list. From the library view there are a lot more sorting and viewing options. You can sort by name, file type, size, and date. And there are filtering options for all, new, reading, read, and tags. It would be better if Onyx could make it so those sorting and tag options could be applied to the homescreen as well.

Good to know, thanks!

Hello Nathan,
First of all, than you for reviewing the M96!
A couple of questions, if you don’t mind:
I saw that there’s a SW update available at http://ereader-store.de/DATA/M96/update.zip
Did you try it?
How does the M96 compare to the M92 as a dedicated e-reader?
Where can one order the M96 in Canada?
Thank you!
Nathan says
No, that’s for the other M96 version from the German store. This one is the Universe model that sells from Arta Tech and Amazon. There are a couple minor software tweaks, like the built in Polish ebook store on the Universe, so software updates aren’t compatible between them. The folks at eReader-Store generally put out updates faster and more frequently than other retailers, some of which wait for more complete update packages before issuing them, so it could be a few more weeks before the Universe gets updated. Right now it says there’s no update package available.
To answer your second question, there’s no comparing the M96 and M92. The M96 runs Android and has a faster processor and more RAM, with the ability to install multiple reading apps, the M92 is outdated and slow…
As for the third question, I’m not sure. You can probably order directly from Arta Tech, Amazon, or eReader-Store. It should be coming back in stock over the next week or two.

Is there a downside in buying the version from eReader-Store instead of the Universe?
Nathan says
Not that I know of.

Thanks!

Dear nathan…
I saw ur utube review of the m96 univ. Nd was extremely fascinated by the concept…upon readin amazon reviews of customers a general perception of users seems to be that the device either 8s defective right frm the start or wears down within weeks..since youve been using it 4 quite some time now..do u notice any deterioration in in the device..kindly reply..
Nathan says
It sounds like you’re taking about the Onyx T68. The M96 runs better. I haven’t had any problems with it or heard of any common problems. Ordering just depends on where you live and your preference. Amazon is usually favored in the US because of easier returns and cheaper shipping. It’s from the same company that sells them either way.
