Oyster, one of the leading ebook subscription services and recently launched ebook retailer, added an interesting new feature to their ebook app this past week called Lumin.
With Lumin turned on, the Oyster ebook app will automatically adjust the amount of blue light that emits from your smartphone or tablet’s screen depending on the time of day and your location.
Studies have shown that exposure to blue light at night can have a negative effect on sleeping patterns because it suppresses melatonin production in the brain.
According to Oyster’s analytics, the peak reading time for people using the Oyster app is between 9:00 and 10:00 pm. So by gradually reducing the amount of blue light emitted from the screen as the night progresses, the theory is it won’t interrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm.
The new Lumin feature has an automatic setting that detects your location and the time of day to automatically adjust the level of blue light coming from your screen as the sun sets and rises, replacing the blue light with a warm, soft amber light.
There’s also a custom option where you can manually control the amount of blue light emitted from the screen, and set different colored backgrounds to your preference.
You can test out the new Lumin feature using the Oyster ebook app for Android from Google Play and on iOS devices via iTunes.
