The Kindle Colorsoft started shipping at the end of October, but soon after it was released the shipping date got pushed back to 3-5 weeks because of the well-publicized frontlight issue.
A few days ago shipping was still several weeks out, but now all of the sudden the Kindle Colorsoft is back in stock at Amazon and it’s shipping now and is scheduled to arrive before Christmas.
It’s not on sale like the Kindle Paperwhite and kids Kindles are right now, but you can get 10% back when paying with a Prime Visa card.
If you plan on buying one of Amazon’s plant-based leather covers for the Colorsoft you’d be better off getting the Kindle Colorsoft Essentials Bundle for $327.97 because at that point you’re basically getting a wireless charging dock for $5 instead of $40 when buying everything separately.
Hopefully they got the frontlight problem sorted out on these newer units; they still have the We Want You to Know warning on the product page about the yellow band, and it says they’re “making the appropriate adjustments to ensure that new devices will not experience this issue moving forward.”
Check out my Kindle Colorsoft review to learn more about Amazon’s first color Kindle and to watch a video review of it in action. The screen actually has better color and contrast than similar ereaders with color E Ink screens, so if they got the frontlight issue sorted out it has a chance to be a successful product despite all the negative reviews early on. All color E Ink screens have some drawbacks when compared to regular E Ink screens so there’s always going to be some people that don’t like color E Ink, but other people would rather have color than a slightly better screen, so either way it’s good to have more choices.
