If you’ve been thinking about buying a new Kindle, June is going to be the best time to get one and what could end up being the lowest prices of the year.
Amazon has announced they will be doing Prime Day in June this year, from June 23rd through June 26th. Prime Day and Black Friday are when Kindles usually hit their lowest prices for the year. Sometimes Prime Day has lower prices on some items and sometimes Black Friday has lower prices on some Kindles.
Last year Prime Day sales were surprisingly good on Kindles. The Kindle Colorsoft SE was $100 off, the Paperwhite SE was $50 off, and the previous gen Kindle Scribe was $140 off, so I’m expecting another round of good deals this year.
When Do the Deals Start?
One thing that throws people off about Prime Day is Amazon starts rolling out sales early (they’ve already started some now), and then people are hesitant to buy because they think the prices will go even lower for Prime Day. But that’s not how it works.
With Kindles, Amazon usually starts the sales a week or two before Prime Day starts, with discounts primarily on bundle packages and sometimes refurbished units or previous gen models (I expect big discounts on the previous gen Kindle Scribe to start soon).
Once something goes on sale, that’s the sale—they don’t normally lower the price more on Prime Day, but you might be able to get things cheaper by waiting for sales on individual items. The bundle deals are good if you want the bundled items (and Amazon offers approximately 50 million different Kindle bundles now), but you can usually get 3rd-party cases and accessories for cheaper. The lowest prices on Kindles are when they are purchased individually, and those sales don’t usually start until later.
Right now there aren’t any Kindle devices on sale yet, but you can keep an eye on the Prime Day Sales Page at Amazon for updates. I’ll also post about any Kindle deals the day they go live so you can check back here as well.
Early Kindle Sales
While no Kindle devices are on sale yet, Amazon does have a few Kindle accessories on sale already for Prime members. The Kindle wireless charging dock is marked down to $29.99 from $44.99, the Kindle Scribe Premium Pen is on sale for $51.99, down from $79.99, and they have some Kindle Scribe covers on sale for the first two models: the Leather Folio Cover is $59.99 ($40 off) and the Plant-Based Leather Folio Cover is $47.99 ($32 off).
Kindle Unlimited Deal for Prime Members: Get 3 months of Kindle Unlimited for Free – Amazon confirmed this deal in their press release. I’m not sure when it starts, but it might be live now. Like always, these deals aren’t available if you have an active KU membership, and it’s not available for all accounts.
Audible Deal for Prime Members: Get 3-month Audible subscription for Free – Once again, this offer varies by account, but it’s mentioned on the early deals list so it should start soon if it hasn’t already started (I can’t tell since I don’t currently have a Prime membership).
Kindle Colorsoft Essentials Bundle – At $306.97, this isn’t on sale yet as of this writing, but Amazon specifically mentions this bundle as being an early Prime Day deal, so I’d expect it to go on sale soon. They don’t list a sale price; they just say Kindle bundles will be up to 45% off.
Prime Sales Exclusive?
Sometimes a Prime membership is required to get the sale prices, sometimes it isn’t, but you can usually get a free 30-day trial for Prime if you haven’t already done so recently.
20% Trade-in Discount Stacks with Prime Sales
One thing worth considering, if you have an older Kindle that you no longer want to use (or if it’s broken), you can trade it in to get an extra 20% off the price of a new Kindle. Trade-in discounts stack with Prime sales so you can get an even better deal that way.
New Kindle Scribes On Sale?
I’m interested to see if Amazon puts the new Kindle Scribe and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft on sale for Prime Day. They haven’t been on sale yet since they were released in December, and there aren’t any teaser hints that would suggest they’re planning on putting them on sale on the early deals list. Amazon is releasing the Kindle Scribe without a frontlight on June 10th, so it most likely won’t go on sale unless they do some kind of limited-time lightning deal on a bundle package.
