What Happened to Onyx’s 7.8″ Nova Line?

February 2, 2024 by Nathan 3 Comments

It looks like Onyx has decided to phase out their Nova line of ereaders and eNotes with 7.8-inch E Ink screens. I haven’t seen any Nova models available to purchase anywhere for quite some time, and Onyx didn’t release any new Nova models last year for the first time since the Nova line came out in 2018.

Onyx doesn’t have any of the Nova models listed on their website anymore. If you dig around you can find some used ones, but they no longer sell them new, and they’re no longer listed on Amazon or other authorized retailers websites.

The only 7.8-inch model that Onyx still sells in the Tab Mini C, their latest color model in that size. It’s kind of like an upgraded version of the Nova Air C, but their “Tab” models are a new line with higher-end specs and they don’t offer a 7.8-inch version with a regular black and white E Ink screen.

The last Nova model, the Nova Air 2, was released in October of 2022, which doesn’t seem very long ago by normal standards, but that’s like 3 generations ago by Onyx’s standards, especially with their frequently-refreshed Nova line (they released something like 8 different Nova models in 4 years).

The Nova Air C with a color E Ink screen was released almost two years ago in March of 2022, and it’s no longer available anymore either, and they never released a direct replacement for it, although the Tab Mini C is a nice upgraded alternative of it.

Onyx is still releasing new 10.3-inch Note Air models on a regular basis, but at this point it looks like they’ve decided to shelve the smaller 7.8-inch Nova line. The Nova models were pretty popular for a while so it’s surprising to see them go, but apparently Onyx has different plans moving forward.

I had a Nova Air C, liked the size for one handed reading of manga, but I couldn’t get over the paltry 32 GB of storage. I thought to wait for a nova refresh (BW) with SD card slot but that never happened. So I’ve settled on the Leaf 2, it works great but the screen could be a bit bigger.

The “tab mini” line does not support page turn buttons, like the Nova did (with a magnetic case).
    For me it’s a downgrade.
