PocketBook Era Lite Review – 7″ eReader with Carta 1300 Screen

August 5, 2026 by Nathan Groezinger Leave a Comment

Pocketbook Era Lite Review

Review Date: August 2026 – Review unit purchased from Amazon

Overview

The Pocketbook Era Lite was released in May of 2026, and it’s being marketed as a device with a “premium design” at an “affordable price”.

It’s a lot like the original Pocketbook Era that came out in 2022, minus the flush front layer that made the screen look cloudy and faded, and it has less storage space (16GB vs 64GB), a lower waterproof rating (IPX4 instead of IPX8), and they dumped the external speaker (although the port remains).

Trimming down some of the features helped the PocketBook Era Lite hit a lower price point of $199 in the US, which is only $20 more than the equivalent ad-free Kindle Paperwhite.

PocketBook Era Lite Review

Pros

  • Libby support is built-in, and it supports using multiple libraries and borrowing audiobooks in addition to ebooks.
  • The E Ink Carta 1300 screen looks great; it’s much clearer and sharper than the screen on the 1st gen Era with the flush front layer, and the frontlight looks great too.
  • Competitively priced, and it feels nice for the price.
  • The design makes it comfortable to hold, and the page buttons are conveniently placed.

Cons

  • The interface is often slow to react and slow to load.
  • Limited layout options for ebooks using the built-in app (but you can install KOReader if you want more options).
  • Libby requires signing in with an Adobe ID to download ebooks, unlike the Libby app on phones and tablets, and there’s very limited searching and sorting options.
  • The built-in ebook store isn’t available in the US (so why is it on the home screen?).

Verdict

With physical page-turn buttons, built-in Libby support, true text-to-speech, and support for a wide range of formats (including audio files), the Pocketbook Era Lite is strong competition for Kindles and Kobos.

It has a screen that looks great, with a refined design that’s comfortable to hold in both portrait and landscape modes with either hand, but it’s impossible not to notice how much slower the software is compared to other ereaders. If you can get used to the lagginess it’s a nice reading device with a balanced set of features, but it feels like using a device from a decade ago. If Pocketbook would just optimize their software a little more they could have some of the best ereaders on the market.
