The Kindle Oasis 3 was released in July of 2019 so it’s been on the market for a long time now by ebook reader standards. In fact, Amazon has never kept a Kindle on the market for this long without updating it or discontinuing it so something has to give eventually, and it’s starting to look like that might be happening now.
The graphite version of the Kindle Oasis with 32GB of storage has been listed as “currently unavailable” for a while now on Amazon’s website, with a note that says, “We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock”. They still have the gold version available with 32GB, and the 8GB version is still in stock.
Over on Amazon UK, the gold version of the Kindle Oasis isn’t available at all anymore. The 32GB Wi-Fi version and the cellular version are both listed as “currently unavailable”. The graphite version is still available, though.
On Amazon’s Canadian website, the 32GB version of the Kindle Oasis with Wi-Fi is “temporarily out of stock” but it can still be ordered.
It’s starting to look like the 32GB Kindle Oasis is becoming hard to find in a number of countries, not just one.
This is the kind of thing that usually starts to happen when Amazon has decided to phase out a particular Kindle model, like the Kindle Voyage back in 2018. They started phasing it out about 3.5 years after it was released, and by the 4-year mark it was no longer available to purchase new.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Amazon heavily discount the Kindle Oasis for Black Friday to help clear out the remaining stock. They can’t keep selling what was supposed to be a top-of-the-line Kindle that is now clearly outdated compared to newer models forever.
It would be nice to see Amazon release a new version of the Kindle Oasis, but after nearly 4.5 years now that’s looking extremely unlikely. They updated the Paperwhite 3 after three years but they’ve never waited this long to upgrade a model before. The first gen Oasis was upgraded after just 1.5 years, and the second gen Oasis was replaced after 2 years, so at 4 years and 4 months the Kindle Oasis 3 looks like it’s going to be the last in the Oasis line, and its days are numbered.

I finally gave up on waiting and bought Onyx Page instead. I wish it had IP68 so that I could read on it in bath, but other than that I’m super excited about how good that device is. It’s superior to Oasis in every way. It has the same screen size, but it’s smaller, screen is much better, battery life is several times better, it has USB-C, it’s easier to hold, it’s much faster and the magnetic case is awesome. I use it with BookFusion for sideloaded books and with Everand (new name for Scribd) and I’m very happy with it. So no new Oasis is fine with me now.

It shows how little Amazon cares about Kindles these days. All they’d have to do is release an updated Oasis with a current screen and a USB-C port and people would line up to buy it. All the Oasis clones that have come out in the past 2+ years have these upgrades and yet Amazon can’t be bothered to upgrade the Oasis or at least lower the price to a reasonable level considering it has an outdated screen, an old school USB port, and the base model has half the storage space as the entry-level Kindle now.

Maybe the oasis is not that big of a seller as people like to think, so there is no incentive to keep that line updated. It will be interesting if they actually phase it out or are actually trying to get rid of old stock before releasing a new version. The pricing is just to high of the Oasis for what it has to offer.
Nathan says
Because of the high price, I think the Oasis probably is less popular than people think. They definitely sell a lot more Paperwhites and basic Kindles. And with the screen being outdated on the Oasis by a couple years now you have to wonder if they’re even still making them. Why would E Ink bother to keep making these older regular Carta HD screens when all the newer 7-inch models from other brands that have been released over the past 2+ years are using the newer Carta 1200 screens.

Totaly. If they gave it new screen, better battery and USB-C, I wouldn’t have switched. Unfortunately Paperwhite isn’t for me, so they don’t have any compelling reader for me right now. What a shame. Now they won’t get me back as I got used to Everand and Bookfusion and I don’t want to use the cumbersome Send to Kindle anymore.

its now feb 3 and I’ve been trying to get one also ! looks dire indeed..tried getting a refurbished one on woot , ordered it 4 times and each time the order was refunded “due to supplier issues !?..so yeah looks like its being phased out for a new model…which usually means more expensive lol !!

I have hundreds of purchased titles in the amazon ecosystem. What would I do to keep those when switching to Onyx for example?
Nathan says
You can use the Kindle app on Onyx devices without any hassle. It doesn’t work as well on E Ink as an actual Kindle but it works well enough to be useable. Or you can remove the DRM from your purchased Kindle ebooks, which is kind of a hassle, especially if you have hundreds, and read them in the Boox app or with other apps.

An odd thing I noticed recently when getting a magazine with Kindle Unlimited that the Oasis isn’t listed under “available immediately on these devices and platforms.” The Voyager and the DX and I think every other Kindle was listed. Of course, it downloaded to my Oasis 2 just fine.

Poor Oasis got phased out much before it had a chance to sell out., unlike Metallica.

Still waiting for a Kindle Color.

A Kindle colour (or any colour ereader) is something I’m not interested.
